Island Lake Residents Make Successful TNR Possible
AHA! offers TNR (trap, neuter and return) coaching and assistance along with low-cost spay/neuter to the public because we are dedicated to reducing the feral/wild cat population. Working at the “front” end to control the breeding and reproduction of outdoor cats helps to reduce the “back” end problem of millions of cats and kittens being euthanized every year. When we hear of a colony of intact outdoor cats, we try to provide as much assistance as we can. We have traps, work with veterinarians who do low-cost surgeries, provide transportation to and from the vets if needed, and are dedicated to the homeless cats and kittens.
Often when we go into a neighborhood, we are not welcomed by all residents. Some are upset when we have to return the cats after surgery. So it’s always a pleasure when we get to partner with a group of people like those in an Island Lake community we recently assisted. A good number of households had been feeding and looking after a cat colony, which was growing steadily without benefit of sterilization. When we arrived to help, we were welcomed by the residents who went out of their way to help us and the cats.
We set up “home base” at Guy’s house. And Peter was always there to offer water/soft drinks and straw hats to shield the sun on hot days. We ultimately sterilized 20 outdoor cats plus six indoor pets. A couple of the residents are taking cats/kittens into their homes as pets. And approximately six homes are going to continue feeding and looking after the cats that were returned—a critical component of a successful TNR program. Along with Guy and Peter, others helped by offering to set/watch traps, offering beer (!!!), letting us know when certain cats frequented their yards, etc. Our thanks extend not only to Guy and Peter, but also to Lori, Phyllis and Peter, John, Carla, and all the neighbors. It’s a pleasure working with people who are as welcoming and cooperative as this Island Lake community.

Healing Touch for Animals—an SRO Crowd!
The Healing Touch for Animals (HTA) presentation and demonstration by HTA practioner Carol Michalski was an interesting and informative afternoon.
Held at the training center at Chalet Nursery in Wilmette, Carol's event explained healing touch, why it works, how it works, and told many stories of how she's helped animals through this wonderful holistic technique.
After her presentation, Carol demonstrated HTA on a few lucky dogs.

You've Gotta See It...!
"How can I teach your children gentleness and mercy to the weak, and reverence for life...when by your laws, your actions, and your speech, you contradict the very things I teach?
Among the noblest in the land—
Though man may count himself the least—
That man I honor and revere,
Who without favor, without fear,
In the great city dares to stand,
The friend of every friendless beast."
~Henry W. Longfellow
